How to Calculate the Cost of Flooring

When starting on a flooring project, one of the most crucial steps is calculating the cost and getting the right measurements. We understand this process can be daunting, but it doesn't have to be. With our easy-to-use flooring calculator and basic math, you can get a clear understanding of how much flooring you'll need and the total cost.

Understanding Square Footage

Before diving into cost calculations, you’ll need to understand how to measure the square footage of your space. This measurement is the foundation for determining how much flooring material you'll need, and it is very easy to calculate.

Square Footage Formula: Length x Width = Square Footage

Steps to Measure Square Footage

1. Measure Each Room

  • Use a tape measure to find the length and width of each room where you'll be installing flooring.
  • Multiply the length by the width to get the square footage of each room.
  • If the room is not a perfect rectangle, divide it into smaller sections, calculate each section's square footage, and then sum them up.

2. Find the Total Square Footage

  • Add the square footage of all rooms and areas together to get the total square footage for your project.

Using Hewn’s Flooring Calculator

Once you have the total square footage of your home or room, you can use our flooring calculator to determine how much flooring you’ll need and the associated costs. Here’s how:

1. Enter Your Measurements

  • On our website, find your desired collection of flooring and choose the color you want for your home.
  • Input the total square footage of your project.

2. Calculate Overages

  • Our calculator automatically adds a 10% overage to account for cutting and fitting around edges. This ensures you won't run short of material.

3. Determine Number of Boxes

  • Based on the overages and square footage you entered in, the calculator will tell you how many boxes of Stoneform® flooring you’ll need.

4. Calculate the Cost

  • The calculator will display the total cost for your project. This total includes the cost of flooring and an added 10% overage.

An Example Calculation

Let’s walk through a hypothetical example:

1. Measure Your Space

  • Living Room: 20 feet x 15 feet = 300 square feet
  • Kitchen: 12 feet x 10 feet = 120 square feet
  • Hallway: 15 feet x 3 feet = 45 square feet
  • 300 + 120 + 45 = 465 total square feet

2. Using the Calculator

  • For this example, we are choosing Rustic from the Becki Owens Collection.
  • Enter 465 square feet into the calculator.
  • The calculator will add an additional 10% to your total square footage for overages: 465 + 46.5 = 511.5 square feet.
  • It will then calculate the number of boxes of flooring you need for your project.

3. See Your Cost

  • The total cost for 465 square feet of Becki Owens Rustic would be $2821.50.
  • Depending on the line and collection of flooring you have decided on, the price per square foot will vary.

Tips for Accurate Measurements

Double-Check Your Work: Always measure twice to ensure accuracy. Mistakes in measurement can lead to ordering too much or too little flooring.

Use a Laser Measure: For larger areas, a laser measure can provide more accurate readings and save time.

Consider Professional Help: If you’re unsure about your measurements, seeking out a professional from Thumbtack to measure your space.
